Michael J. McConnell, Ph.D., received his Ph.D. from the University of California – San Diego in 2004. His doctoral research included one of the first reports of mosaic somatic mutations in the brain. As a Crick-Jacobs Junior Fellow at the Salk Institute, Mike developed single-cell approaches to study brain somatic mosaicism further. This led to the first publications of mosaic copy number variants in human neurons (CNV neurons) and RNA sequencing from single neuronal nuclei. Mike’s laboratory at the University of Virginia School of Medicine began collaborating with LIBD in 2014 as part of the NIMH-funded Brain Somatic Mosaicism Network. This work led to the surprising finding that CNV neurons are selectively vulnerable to aging. Mike joined LIBD in 2020. His laboratory develops single-cell approaches to map how brain somatic mosaicism changes during aging and neurodegenerative disease.
