Kunal Kathuria, Ph.D., received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Particle Physics from the University of Virginia in 2013. His work was on angular momentum of hadrons, in particular on understanding how spin and orbital angular momentum within the proton, deuteron etc. can be viewed in the context of the particle’s total angular momentum. He gradually branched out of physics and is now working with Dr. Mike McConnell in the area of brain somatic mosaicism (BSM). Kunal’s research involves computationally understanding how large copy number variations (CNVs) in individual neurons contributing to BSM may manifest differently in individuals with neuronal disease, as compared to neurotypical individuals. His research also focuses on analyzing classification patterns specific to each type of individual and understanding the genetic role CNVs may play in such diseases. He is currently working with single cell neuronal data from individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. Kunal’s specialty is the detection of structural variation in the genome and he is lead author of SVXplorer, a genomic structural variant caller he worked on with Dr. Aakrosh Ratan. He has also worked in the area of quantum computing to develop a quantum circuit for a Hamming-distance-based genomic disease classifier in one of his submitted works.
